What is Lifestyle medicine?

Lifestyle Medicine is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach, which is addressing the challenges faced by our society and its impacts on our health. It is the application of environmental, behavioural, motivational, nutritional and medical principles related to various health problems, in a public and/or private clinical setting.

Lifestyle Medicine is a holistic approach to chronic and lifestyle-related diseases. It involves a team of health professionals working together to prevent, manage and treat conditions that result from unhealthy habits, unhealthy environment or unhealthy lifestyle.  The Lifestyle Medicine  approach provides assessment, diagnostic and recommendations that will be aiming to correct and/or improve the condition suffered by the patient. This process will be done through a thorough physical exam, questionnaires, different tests, education and an active participation of the patient in his/her treatment.

What is the difference between a regular GP and a GP who has Lifestyle Medicine training?

Lifestyle Medicine differs significantly from conventional clinical practice by requiring patients to be highly active in their own health care. As a result, a deep understanding of the motivational principles governing behaviour, emotional responses and the necessary commitments required to make lifestyle changes is fundamental to effective practice.

By targeting the root causes, a range of health issues can be potentially reduced, eliminated or prevented. In addition, Lifestyle Medicine allows practitioners to address these contributing factors by prescribing changes in behaviour and environment where possible.

As a result, this functional medicine approach will benefit the following patients who are suffering from multiple long standing conditions:

  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Trouble losing weight despite eating all the “right” foods
  • Chronic gut issues, e.g. bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and stomach digestive problems
  • Feelings of anxiety even after having tried multiple remedies and fixes
  • Female hormonal issues
  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity
  • Chronic conditions such as sensitivities, allergies, recurrent infections
  • And many others…
